Flank Speed and Hyperion serve as the Navy and Marine Corps’ respective Microsoft 365 (M365) cloud environments, delivering enhanced collaboration, productivity and zero trust security capabilities to almost 700,000 users worldwide. These environments are federated to provide a mission-focused and centralized, enterprise-wide approach to modern IT services, ensuring secure and efficient daily operations across DON.
“Enterprise IT Service designation solidifies Flank Speed and Hyperion as critical zero trust enablers of the DON’s digital workplace,” said Jeffrey Proudfoot, PEO Digital’s acting executive director. “This recognition underscores our commitment to delivering seamless, secure and mission-ready IT infrastructure for Sailors, Marines and civilians alike.”
A Foundation for Seamless Collaboration
Historically, Navy and Marine Corps IT services were managed independently, leading to challenges in interoperability and efficiency. With this new designation, Flank Speed and Hyperion are positioned as the authoritative, enterprise-wide solutions for productivity and messaging services, breaking down silos and standardizing collaboration across DON.
Flank Speed provides the Navy’s unclassified M365 environment, supporting over 520,000 users with enhanced remote access, productivity tools and robust cybersecurity features. With a centralized landing page — the Flank Speed Hub — users can seamlessly manage licensing, entitlements and service requests through the Flank Speed Account and Services Tool (FsAST). Meanwhile, Hyperion serves as the Marine Corps’ unclassified M365 cloud environment, offering similar benefits to more than 160,000 users. Notably, Hyperion provides each user with 5 terabytes (TB) of OneDrive storage, supporting greater data management capabilities.
“Flank Speed and Hyperion ensure that our Navy and Marine Corps personnel can perform their warfighting mission using cloud-enabled platforms from shore to ship, in flight and at the tactical edge,” Proudfoot said. “This unity strengthens DON’s ability to execute missions effectively while maintaining continuously compliant security standards.”
Enabling Zero Trust Security and Modernized IT Infrastructure
Built on the Department of Defense’s (DOD) zero trust principles, Flank Speed and Hyperion prioritize security and accessibility. By integrating multi-factor authentication (MFA), software defined perimeter (SDP) and secure conditional access controls, these platforms empower users to work from anywhere while maintaining compliance with stringent cybersecurity policies.
Additionally, the designation underscores the DON’s commitment to modernizing its IT infrastructure by leveraging Impact Level 5 (IL5) Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and IL5/6 Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solutions. This ensures continued scalability and adaptability to evolving operational needs.
Enterprise-Wide Support and Future Enhancements
Flank Speed and Hyperion services are centrally funded at the Navy and Marine Corps enterprise levels, ensuring widespread availability without burdening individual commands. Navy and DON Secretariat commands seeking to leverage Flank Speed services can coordinate through the FsAST team at fsast-support@us.navy.mil, while Marine Corps commands can reach out to enterprise_service_desk@usmc.mil for Hyperion services.
Looking ahead, PEO Digital remains focused on enhancing these enterprise services to further streamline user experiences, improve automation and align with broader DOD IT modernization efforts.
“This designation is not just a milestone — it’s a foundational, hybrid multi-cloud infrastructure enabling the future of DON’s digital operations,” Proudfoot said. “By unifying Navy and Marine Corps under a single enterprise IT service framework, we are setting the stage for even greater efficiency, security and collaboration.”
Flank Speed and Hyperion represent a transformative leap forward in DON’s IT landscape, ensuring that Sailors, Marines and civilians have access to the tools they need — anytime, anywhere, with the security they require.
