Flank Speed delivers DON’s largest-ever digital transformation

01 July 2021

From Aaron Weis

Since the last edition of CHIPS magazine, the Department of the Navy (DON) has surpassed a major milestone in its modernization journey through the successful enablement of Flank Speed – the Navy’s permanent, single enterprise Microsoft 365 (M365) solution – to the first 266,000 user.
Since the last edition of CHIPS magazine, the Department of the Navy (DON) has surpassed a major milestone in its modernization journey through the successful enablement of Flank Speed – the Navy’s permanent, single enterprise Microsoft 365 (M365) solution – to the first 266,000 users.

Flank Speed is delivering phased access to Microsoft Teams as a replacement for the Commercial Virtual Remote (CVR) environment deployed in 2020 as an emergency measure to support mass telework operations. Flank Speed will increase capabilities over time to deliver a fully integrated M365 experience. Flank Speed is a new cloud environment that enables automation, flexible access, new identity and zero-trust security, and accommodates DoD Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and National Security Systems information.

I want to take the time to introduce you to Flank Speed’s very own mascot, Fathom, seen on the front cover of the current edition of CHIPS. “Fathom” has two distinct definitions: a measure of water depth and ‘to understand.’ This is a fitting name for a mascot that promotes the Navy’s journey to M365 and the adoption of Cloud services. Fathom has been featured on our Flank Speed communications and is here to stay.

Flank Speed is the DON’s largest-ever digital transformation initiative, and as with any massive transformation effort, there have been and will be bumps in the road. Issues are being worked through and users are learning the capabilities and how to access and use Flank Speed. It’s a journey that we are embarking on together. I encourage you to be patient; issues will be resolved, capabilities will continually be added, and we will all be moving along, on and at Flank Speed. The Marine Corps has already completed their transition to O365 for 150,000 users.
